Kaitlin Barr becomes first woman boundary umpire in 130 years
Kaitlin Barr becomes the first woman to earn a boundary umpire contract in 130 years of VFL and AFL history.
Kaitlin Barr is the first woman to earn a boundary umpire contract in 130 years. A secondary school teacher at Camberwell Girls Grammar, Barr has broken this historic barrier.
The AFL elevated five new umpires for the 2027 season. Barr earned her place after performing well in three AFL matches across the past two seasons.
She appeared twice as an injury replacement in 2026. Joining her are field umpires Sam Ferguson and Sam Whetton, boundary umpire Harrison Hansford, and goal umpire Luke Caifano.
Ferguson moved from Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory to Melbourne to pursue his umpiring dream. Whetton will join his brother Alex on the AFL umpiring list.
Hansford was named VFL Boundary Umpire of the Year for 2026.
