Canberra EV numbers pass 20,000 as new chargers open

Canberra's electric vehicle registrations surpassed 20,000, up from 13,300 last year, as the government opens new charging stations.

Electric vehicle registrations in Canberra have jumped to 20,000, with almost 7,000 added in the past year alone. More than 40 per cent of new cars registered last month were electric.

The ACT government opened two new fast-charging sites in Belconnen on November 4. The two new sites bring the total to 12 fast bays across three locations.

About 330 public charging bays now operate across Canberra. The government has committed to adding another 90 in coming years, but has not confirmed when or where.

The biggest challenge remains apartment residents and renters who cannot install chargers at home. Public fast charging costs about $12 per 100 kilometres, compared with roughly $14 for petrol and $3 for home charging.

The rapid EV take-up has exceeded expectations, driven mainly by rising petrol prices.

Why it mattersRapid EV adoption means charging infrastructure must keep pace, or many owners will struggle to access reliable charging outside their homes.

AustraliaCanberra is Australia's EV adoption leader, and solving the apartment charging gap could become a model for other cities.
