After endometriosis battle, Lena Dunham welcomes first baby via surrogate
The 40-year-old Girls creator revealed in Vogue that she became a mother via surrogacy after a hysterectomy at 31.
Lena Dunham, creator of the HBO series Girls, announced the birth of her daughter via surrogate in a Vogue column. Dunham's path to motherhood followed a 12-year battle with endometriosis, which led to a hysterectomy at age 31.
In her recent memoir Famesick, she detailed her search for a surrogate and the emotional toll of the process during the pandemic, swinging between hope and despair. The daughter was born 13 days after her due date.
In the column, Dunham described sitting between her surrogate's legs on a hospital bed, waiting for her first glimpse of her child. She said the arrival left her "bashful and dizzy with joy".
Her husband is screenwriter and producer Luis Felber, with whom she created the Netflix series Too Much in 2025.
