Tasmanian couple with a dog says about 25 rentals turned them down
Statewide vacancy is 0.7 per cent, with most rentals drawing up to 50 applicants.
Since July, a Tasmanian couple has received about 25 rental rejections. The couple say they earn a comfortable six-figure income and always pay rent on time.
The couple said that once their dog came off the form, they were approved to view a house. After viewing those homes, they added the dog back to the paperwork and were rejected.
Michelle Tynan of the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania did not believe there was a link to pets. Ms Tynan said most rentals draw up to 50 applicants, with a statewide vacancy rate of 0.7 per cent.
Ben Bartl of the Tenants' Union of Tasmania says landlords are still discriminating against prospective renters with pets. The couple were due to leave their home in September, but are now on a rolling lease.
