Bruce Baird, Liberal MP and Olympic architect, dies aged 84
Liberal politician Bruce Baird, who secured the Sydney 2000 Olympics, died aged 84 in Singapore.
Baird served as a state MP for 11 years, then in federal parliament for nine years. As a state MP for Northcott, he was instrumental in securing the Olympics for Sydney while holding the transport, tourism and environment portfolio.
Baird represented the federal seat of Cook from 1998 to 2007, stepping aside to make way for future prime minister Scott Morrison. Baird was known for his stance on asylum seekers, which often put him at odds with John Howard's government.
He was the father of former NSW premier Mike Baird and journalist Julia Baird. His wife Judy died in 2021.
