NSW Liberal veteran Bruce Baird dies aged 84

The 84-year-old represented Cook from 1998 to 2007, stepping down after expressing disappointment at never becoming a minister.

Bruce Baird represented the Sydney seat of Cook from 1998 to 2007, serving in federal parliament after a state career. Baird was father to former NSW premier Mike Baird and journalist Julia Baird.

Baird retired before the 2007 election, telling media he was disappointed at never securing a ministerial position. The NSW Liberal Party described him as 'a party stalwart and a greatly respected politician' who served NSW in state and federal parliaments.

Baird received a Member of the Order of Australia award in 2010. The Cook seat later passed to former prime minister Scott Morrison.
