New Zealand Defence Force chief resigns over conduct breach
Air Marshal Tony Davies, head of New Zealand's Defence Force, resigned after admitting to an inappropriate relationship.
Air Marshal Tony Davies stepped down as chief of New Zealand's Defence Force on Friday after admitting to an inappropriate relationship while leading a military unit. Davies joined the air force in 1984 and took the top job in 2024, saying he regretted not disclosing the relationship when given the chance.
The Defence Ministry described it as an integrity matter and said Davies's position was no longer tenable. Deputy Chief Rear Admiral Mat Williams is taking over.
The case has been referred to an independent inspector-general who investigates military conduct. Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith acknowledged Davies's 42 years of service but said the circumstances would disappoint defence force personnel.
