Australia's Auditor-General raised alarm over healthcare providers using AI to inflate their bills to Medicare. The National Audit Office found eight possible fraud cases worth $5.2 million involving an AI tool.
Services Australia and the Department of Health have known about the issue for over a year. Auditor-General Caralee McLiesh identified it as a major integrity risk that remains largely unaddressed.
The Medicare Integrity Reform Steering Group discussed it in June 2025. The report shows how new technology can be misused.
