Dutch group files climate complaint against New Zealand with EU
A Dutch environmental group accused New Zealand of breaking climate promises in its EU trade deal.
Dutch environmental group Both ENDS says New Zealand broke two key promises in its EU trade deal. The first: do not weaken environmental laws to attract business.
The second: properly follow the Paris climate agreement. The group points to three government actions as breaking these promises.
New Zealand lowered its 2050 methane target. It reversed a ban on new offshore oil and gas projects.
It also changed climate laws to remove liability for emissions damage. The European Commission can now decide whether to investigate.
If it finds a breach of the Paris promise, it could suspend trade benefits. But any penalty would match the actual harm done.
New Zealand's trade minister says foreign groups should not tell the country what to do. The government says it follows all international rules.

Why it mattersTrade deals can have real consequences when countries break environmental promises. A finding against New Zealand could cost it access to the EU market.
AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but if the EU succeeds in enforcing climate commitments through trade deals, Australia's own free trade negotiations may face similar scrutiny on environmental pledges.
