Greens party fractured as new leader Shoebridge clashes with Faruqi
David Shoebridge won the Greens leadership. But internal sources say his relationship with Mehreen Faruqi, who came second, is seriously strained.
Larissa Waters resigned as Greens leader on Monday. Health concerns prompted a leadership ballot on Wednesday.
David Shoebridge won the vote. Mehreen Faruqi came second as deputy.
Sarah Hanson-Young lost in the first round with only two votes. Faruqi has since criticised her colleagues for electing Shoebridge.
She demanded that party members get a vote in future leadership elections. Greens insiders say the relationship between Shoebridge and Faruqi is seriously strained.
Shoebridge said that he respects Faruqi and supports her work in the community. Faruqi said she plans to pursue her politics outside "the constraints of the leadership team".
