Australian doctor's AI eye-screening company has now screened 150,000 patients
Dr Zachary Tan's company Optain Health has raised US$50 million. They have put AI screening tools in 500 sites around the world.
Dr Zachary Tan is a University of Queensland alumnus. Tan founded Optain Health three years ago to solve a problem: how to bring eye care to people in remote areas.
The company uses AI and a tabletop camera to screen for retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The device captures clear retinal images in under a minute.
It provides a diagnosis right away. Optain screened 150,000 patients across 500 sites worldwide in the past year.
About 20,000 were found to have some form of disease. Tan raised US$50 million to fund the expansion.
The technology has been approved by Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration.
