Trump's 'stranger things have happened' reply alarms some observers
El-Sayed says Trump has threatened to deny the result, as he did in 2020.
Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, spoke on NBC's Meet the Press. Democrats must win by massive numbers in the 3 November midterms, El-Sayed said.
Trump and his Republican allies are bound to try to sow doubt about the results, he said. Trump has long baselessly claimed his 2020 loss to Joe Biden was stolen.
A rightwing broadcaster asked whether Trump might declare a national security emergency over the midterms. Trump replied: "Let me just say, stranger things have happened, OK?"
The answer alarmed some observers. The New York Times reported that Trump cast doubt on elections on 440 days of his second presidency.
- 3 November
- Midterm date
- Five points over Republican Mike Rogers
- Michigan poll lead
