Greens plan $25bn takeover of 200 Coles and Woolworths stores

Max Chandler-Mather wants to force big supermarkets to sell stores. He plans to create government-owned grocery stores.

Former Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather has put forward a $25 billion plan to take over more than 200 Coles and Woolworths supermarkets. The plan would open hundreds of new government-owned grocery stores.

The plan is called Fair Go Grocers. Fair Go Grocers would create a non-profit supermarket chain.

The chain would take about 20% of the market share from commercial operators. Chandler-Mather says the stores would save shoppers as much as 22% on an average shop.

That's roughly $60 a week for a household of four. Heavy discounts would apply to essentials including fruit, vegetables, bread, milk and meat.

The plan is similar to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani's publicly owned grocery stores. A poll by YouGov found 84% of Australians somewhat supported or strongly supported the idea.

Why it mattersGrocery costs have squeezed household budgets across Australia. This proposal tackles a real cost-of-living problem that many families face every week.

AustraliaAustralians would have the option of government-owned supermarkets offering cheaper food if the plan gained political support. It directly targets the rising food prices that have strained household budgets.
