Newcastle pushes to add kerb ramps to every footpath project
Newcastle wants to build accessible kerb ramps during routine footpath work instead of adding them later separately.
Labor councillors say building ramps during regular renewal work saves money and time. Without ramps, wheelchair users, mobility scooter riders, people with prams and older people face dead ends.
Recent upgrades missed chances to add ramps where new kerbs and gutters were built. The City of Sydney applies accessibility rules to all new and upgraded infrastructure, and Inner West Council does too.
Newcastle committed to expanding its footpath network by 20 to 30 kilometres this term, making it the ideal time to add accessibility from the start.
Why it mattersA small change to how councils plan their work could remove barriers for thousands of residents and families moving around the city.
AustraliaIf Newcastle passes this, other Australian councils may follow, gradually making local streets safer and more accessible for people with disabilities and parents.
