New ambulance station breaks ground in NSW Hunter region
Construction begins on Caves Beach ambulance station, expected to open late 2027, amid severe staffing shortages.
Construction started Friday on a new ambulance station at Caves Beach in the Hunter region. Ambulance resources have been stretched thin.
Paramedics sometimes cannot crew all calls, even for cardiac arrests and heart attacks. A paramedic waited eight hours with an assault victim at John Hunter Hospital recently.
The hospital also faces bed shortages. Additional stations are planned at Gateshead, East Maitland, Edgeworth, and North Rothbury.
The paramedics' union says the government is years behind on meeting the region's growing needs. John Hunter is short about 40 to 65 beds most days.
