Shoebridge warns US alliance puts Australia in conflict's crosshairs
David Shoebridge, the Greens' new leader, says the US alliance makes Australia a target in any future China conflict.
David Shoebridge took over as Greens leader last week after Larissa Waters stepped down for health reasons. In an exclusive interview, he said Australia's alliance with the US is making it a target in a future regional conflict.
Shoebridge argued that Australia is naturally protected by oceans and distance, but hosting US military assets changes that. The US has deployed B-52 bombers to Australia, built a nuclear submarine base, and operates defence facilities across the country.
Shoebridge said the US wants to fight its next war, against China, from Australian soil. He called this a deep betrayal of Australia's interests, saying Labor, the Coalition, and One Nation all back this alignment.
- 2,000
- US marines in Darwin
- More than a dozen
- Defence facilities jointly operated
- Health issues
- Waters departure reason
Why it mattersThe argument strikes at a core debate: does deeper US military alignment boost or undermine Australia's security in a rising China conflict.
AustraliaShoebridge's position contrasts sharply with Labor and Coalition support for the alliance, putting defence policy at the centre of the next election debate.
