University of Newcastle to demolish historic Hunter Building in 2027
The University of Newcastle has hired McMahon Services to demolish the Hunter Building. The project takes about 18 months. It starts early 2027.
The Hunter Building at Callaghan Campus will be torn down in a $20 million demolition project. It must come down because of age, structural damage, and asbestos contamination.
Site preparation begins in early 2027. Students and staff will be unlikely to notice external changes until later in 2027.
Three nearby buildings will also come down: the Bowman Building, Wonnayba Child Care, and the Special Education Building. Built in 1974, the Hunter Building was once home to Newcastle Teachers' College.
It has trained thousands of students in teaching, visual and performing arts, humanities, administration and nursing. Vice-chancellor Alex Zelinsky said the demolition would open space for future campus development.
No specific plans have been announced yet.
