Newcastle launches three free shuttles to revive city nightlife and retail
Newcastle now runs three free shuttle services linking nightlife venues and independent retailers across four business districts.
The first shuttle, run by Bernie's Bar, launched earlier this year through council funding. Night Hop, the second service, began October 2, running Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 11pm across East End, Midtown, Throsby and Darby Street venues.
Night Hop is funded by the NSW government's Uptown Grants scheme. The third shuttle launched October 8 exclusively for cruise visitors, starting with the Crown Princess.
This visitor shuttle drew on proven models from Darwin and Port Adelaide. East End Collective chairman said cruise passengers spend an average of $197 per person onshore.
On the first day, about 100 cruise visitors took the 20-minute route, providing foot traffic these businesses might not have received. More than $300,000 has flowed from state and local budgets into the shuttles since the initial trial.
