Wollongong tower ignores 40 objections as height soars three times over limit
40 of 44 public submissions opposed the development, but the developer made no changes to its controversial height.
Urban Property Group's 30-storey tower at the Smith Street gasworks site will reach 98 metres, more than three times the maximum permitted height. The council and residents objected strongly during public consultation.
Of 44 submissions, 40 said no to the development. The developer made no changes to the tower's height.
It added only eight parking spaces, bringing the total to 378. Yet the development's own traffic study says 488 spaces are needed.
The builder says the height is well justified for delivering housing and supporting the city centre, but residents and council say it ignores safety and local impacts.
