Texas executes Jamaal Howard as lethal injection safety concerns grow

Texas executed Jamaal Howard by lethal injection days after a woman survived the same procedure in Tennessee.

Texas executed Jamaal Howard, 46, on Wednesday by lethal injection at a prison in Huntsville. Just days earlier, Christa Pike survived two lethal injections in Tennessee on September 30.

Christa Pike later woke up in the hospital, critically ill. Jamaal Howard and Christa Pike were given pentobarbital.

Howard's legal team said Texas's drug supply may have deteriorated and could cause similar problems. They also said Howard had intellectual disability.

Howard was sentenced to death for shooting convenience store worker Vickie Swartout during a robbery in 2000. He was declared dead 19 minutes after the injection.

He became the 30th person executed in the United States this year.
