Melania Trump brokers Oleshky ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia
A White House-confirmed ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky starts 29 October to allow food and evacuations.
US First Lady Melania Trump has negotiated a temporary ceasefire in Oleshky, a southern Ukrainian city held by Russian forces since 2022. Both countries agreed to halt military action starting 29 October to let humanitarian aid enter and allow residents to evacuate through a safe corridor.
Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the deal in a recent call with President Donald Trump, and Ukraine's lead negotiator David Arakhamia confirmed the ceasefire on Telegram. Oleshky's remaining population is 1,700 to 2,000 people, mostly elderly and about 50 children, down from 24,000 before the war.
About 90 per cent of the city was flooded after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed. Residents will receive transport to either Russia or Ukraine, with an American media outlet documenting the evacuation.
