North Korea tests hypersonic missile as Russia partnership escalates
North Korea test-fired a hypersonic missile this month with Russian support.
Early this month, North Korea launched a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile toward waters between Russia and Japan. South Korea said it traveled about 430 miles.
Pyongyang claimed 621 miles and said the missile made sudden maneuvers at several times the speed of sound. Five days later, South Korea tested its own hypersonic missile for the first time.
This showed Seoul's alarm at the North's rapid progress. Russia has given North Korea a live combat laboratory to test weapons and refine tactics in Ukraine.
This is accelerating weapons development. The two countries are also scaling up drone production.
Russia is recruiting North Korean workers to drone factories. It is training drone operators in Pyongyang.
Defence experts warn this partnership is forcing South Korea and its allies to redesign costly air defences. They must counter cheap drone swarms.

Why it mattersHypersonic missiles are harder to intercept. Drone swarms threaten expensive defences. South Korea and its allies face a costly security rethink.
AustraliaNo direct Australian effect yet, but escalating Korean Peninsula tensions involving Russia and advanced weapons could reshape regional security alignments.
