Canberra motorists faced the biggest weekly fuel surge of all eight Australian capitals on 16 September, according to data from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Prices jumped 17.3 cents per litre that week, pushing the city to the highest average petrol cost of any capital.
Opposition Leader Mark Parton told Parliament he saw unleaded at nearly $2.50 a litre and diesel around $3 while driving through his electorate. The key issue is not global oil price swings, but why Canberra drivers pay more than those just across the NSW border.
Labor, Greens and independent MPs backed Parton's call for the Assembly's economics committee to investigate the local fuel market. This follows a similar inquiry seven years ago.
