Tasmania rejects gun ownership cap in firearms reform vote
Tasmania's parliament has rejected an amendment to cap gun ownership during firearms law reform.
Tasmania's lower house voted 15-16 against an amendment that would have limited gun ownership to five weapons, or ten for farmers and sports shooters. The state government, one Shooters, Fishers and Farmers MP, and three independents opposed the caps.
The amendment was part of broader firearms reform. The reform includes a national register, a buyback scheme, and mandatory jail terms for serious crimes.
The government proposed these changes following the Bondi shooting. Labor, the Greens, and three independents supported the ownership limits.
The bill will pass the lower house Thursday and then go to the upper house later this year.
