Man charged over 11 fires in northern Tasmania, including power pole blaze
A 29-year-old man is charged with deliberately lighting 11 fires across northern Tasmania between August 2025 and April 2026.
Police have charged a 29-year-old Nile man with arson and related charges over 11 fires from Perth to Ulverstone. The man was first charged earlier this year over a fire at a public toilet block in Perth.
Longford Police and the Tasmania Fire Service investigated the series of fires happening between August 2025 and April 2026. The 29-year-old now faces additional charges for fires at Longford, Sassafras, Whitemore, and Breadalbane.
The Breadalbane fire on April 20 burnt through gorse and vegetation alongside the Midland Highway. It destroyed power poles and caused local power outages.
Police said the fire was significant and put the public at risk. It took 20 fire crews to contain the blaze.
Inspector Craig Fox said investigations into other fires in the region remain ongoing. The man will appear in court on September 24.
