Max Purcell returns to Davis Cup after anti-doping ban

Max Purcell returns to Davis Cup after completing an 18-month anti-doping ban.

Max Purcell has been named in Lleyton Hewitt's squad for Australia's World Group 1 tie against Poland on 19-20 September at Brisbane's Pat Rafter Arena. The 28-year-old took an 18-month ban in December 2024 after receiving an intravenous infusion of approved vitamins that exceeded the allowed 100-millilitre yearly limit while on holiday in Bali.

Purcell's ban was reduced to 18 months due to his cooperation with anti-doping investigators and the substantial assistance he provided. No prohibited substance was in his body.

Purcell won the 2022 Wimbledon men's doubles title and the 2024 US Open men's doubles title, both before the suspension. He has returned quietly but impressively since June, including a singles win at a tournament in China.

Colleagues like John Millman and Jordan Thompson publicly backed him, arguing the breach was clearly unintentional.
