Man sentenced for forcing girlfriend at knifepoint into carjacking
Michael James Manning was sentenced for robbery after forcing his girlfriend to carjack a homeless student at knifepoint.
Michael James Manning, 32, was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court on Thursday after being found guilty of robbery. On 5 August 2022, Manning handed his girlfriend a 10-centimetre knife and ordered her to carjack a young homeless female university student.
The girlfriend, in a violent relationship with Manning, approached the victim and pointed the knife at her chest, saying, "Don't scream. I'm sorry to have to do this."
The victim was terrified and her car and belongings were stolen. Acting Justice Paul Slattery said Manning planned and directed the offence.
His actions had profound and long-lasting effects on the victim. Manning had a history of abusing his girlfriend and struggled with drug addiction.
