Dr Lachie McKeeman, backed by Indi MP Helen Haines and former Indi MP Cathy McGowan, launched an independent Benambra campaign.
Dr McKeeman spoke to more than 150 supporters at his campaign launch in Baranduda on Saturday and said he is committed to the community. He promises a new Albury-Wodonga hospital, better doctor and nurse training, improved roads, and stronger protections for families.
Dr McKeeman decided to run after the January bushfires devastated the region. His campaign features his family dog, Froggy, to show an underdog bid.
Prominent guests included Indi MP Helen Haines, former Indi MP Cathy McGowan, and local councillors. A fellow speaker urged voters to support alternatives to major parties.
McKeeman said his family is a big reason he is running.
