6,436 apartments put Wollongong nearly two-thirds toward housing goal
6,436 apartments in the pipeline put Wollongong almost two-thirds toward its 9,200-home target with more than two years to go.
Wollongong is on track to exceed its state-set housing target well before the deadline. The government's 9,200-home goal for mid-2029 already has 6,436 apartments in the pipeline through State Significant Development status and height bonuses, putting the city almost two-thirds of the way there with more than two years left.
Major projects include 1,260 units on the former Bunnings site and a 38-storey complex with 270 apartments near North Wollongong station. Smaller developments are also planned across Dapto, the Woonona-Bulli RSL car park site, and Corrimal.
Planning reforms introduced by Minister Paul Scully, including height bonuses for affordable housing and accelerated approvals, were designed to ease NSW's housing shortage. The government confirmed the target is a benchmark, not a cap, so building incentives will continue beyond 2029.
