Perth soprano wins German mentorship and $2500 prize despite vocal disorder
24-year-old Emily Davis won two awards including a $2500 German mentorship despite a vocal disorder in the lead-up.
Emily Davis, a Perth soprano, performed at the 43rd IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition finals in NSW earlier this month despite struggling with a vocal disorder for weeks beforehand. Five classical singers from across Australia competed for prizes and opportunities.
Davis won the Elizabeth Todd memorial prize: $1000 and a Sydney performance slot for sopranos. Davis also claimed the Haas German mentorship award: $2500 and mentoring sessions with Dr Caitlin Hulcup, an international performer and teacher, in Germany.
Davis plans to study a master's degree at the Berlin University of the Arts, where Hulcup leads the voice department. The timing of the prize lined up perfectly with her plans.
