Bendigo Health appoints first prostate cancer nurse in 14 years
Ray Nicholson takes the role of prostate cancer specialist nurse at Bendigo Health after the hospital went without one for 14 years.
Ray Nicholson was announced as Bendigo Health's prostate cancer nurse at the annual Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch. Bendigo Health has not filled this role for 14 years.
Nicholson has worked in nursing for 35 years and says telling patients their cancer is treatable and potentially curable brings relief. The annual fundraising lunch began in Shepparton in 2009 and came to Bendigo in 2010.
It has raised more than 1.4 million dollars locally so far. Money has funded the original nurse position, the Gobbe Wellness Centre and surgery equipment including a surgical robot.
This year's event on November 13 aims to raise more than 180 thousand dollars for a new sexual health clinic. About 422 men in the Loddon Mallee region are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.
