The $27 million Stromlo Playing Fields project has won approval to proceed with artificial turf. An ACT Government review found the environmental risks can be managed.
The synthetic surface sparked debate over water use, microplastic contamination and chemical leaching. The design will use organic sand infill, no recycled rubber.
It will have enclosed drainage. A 200-micron filtration system filters the water.
A concrete kerb stops materials washing into Holdens Creek. Regular maintenance including brushing will reduce fibre shedding.
Stage one includes two rectangular fields and an AFL oval, plus a pavilion and parking. New bike trails are planned for Stromlo Forest Park next year.
