Siena Grima wins historic Epsom in first Group 1 ride
Sydney apprentice Siena Grima became only the second female and first apprentice since 1981 to win the Group 1 Epsom.
Siena Grima, 24, rode God's Window to victory in the $1.5 million Epsom, the most famous mile in Australian racing. The horse finished powerfully to win by two lengths at odds of $26.
Grima's breakthrough came in her first Group 1 ride. Before the race, trainer Chris Waller gave her simple advice: treat it like any other race and enjoy yourself.
She did exactly that. Grima has been mentored by Waller and Hall of Fame jockey Darren Beadman, whose confidence in her grew into her own.
Waller has now won the Epsom seven times, equalling the record held by the late Tommy Smith and Gai Waterhouse.
