Maddinson and Harper added to Test squad as Green sidelined by abdominal strain
Cameron Green has been ruled out with an abdominal strain, and selectors have added Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper to Australia's Test squad.
Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper have been called into Australia's Test squad to face South Africa after Cameron Green was confirmed to have suffered an abdominal strain. Green reeled away in pain after attempting to hook a delivery in the final ODI against the Proteas and could not bowl afterward.
The injury comes after Green had already dealt with shoulder soreness that delayed his bowling return. Harper, a wicketkeeper, recently made a century for Australia A in India and will provide dual cover for Josh Inglis, who is recovering from a broken finger, and for Green.
Maddinson, a sometime Test player who made a comeback last summer after treatment for testicular cancer, provides batting flexibility. Selection chair George Bailey said the pair give Australia the depth needed while injuries resolve.
An injury to Green is a major blow given he broke through for his first Test century at home against Bangladesh in August.
