Claude AI discovers new biological system similar to CRISPR
Anthropic's Claude AI found a biological system called ART. It has some structural similarities to CRISPR gene-editing technology.
Claude AI searched through more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases starting from a research brief. Claude AI identified 3,500 candidates and selected 20 for detailed analysis.
During this process, the AI flagged a new system called array-associated reverse transcriptases (ART) for human researchers. ART has three elements: a reverse transcriptase enzyme, a partner gene, and repeating DNA sequences.
ART looks like CRISPR in structure. But there is no evidence it works like CRISPR.
We don't know if ART works like CRISPR or does different things. The importance of this discovery lies in how it happened.
Claude was given a broad research objective. Then it worked with more freedom than just looking at data.

Why it mattersThis shows AI can make independent biological discoveries. It could speed up gene research and open new treatment pathways faster than traditional methods.
AustraliaClaude AI is available globally including Australia; demonstrates capability that may drive local biotech innovation and research partnerships.
