The Gentlemen Season 2 viewership drops 15% despite Markle casting hype

The Gentlemen Season 2 drew 3 million UK viewers, a 15 per cent drop from Season 1's 3.5 million debut.

Season 2 of Guy Ritchie's crime drama premiered on Netflix on September 3 to lower viewership than its first season. The first episode reached 3 million British viewers in seven days, down from 3.5 million for Season 1's debut in March 2024.

Netflix's own data showed a steeper slide: 6.7 million streams in the opening four days versus nearly 50 per cent higher for Season 1's premiere. The show landed at number three on Netflix's English TV list despite speculation around Meghan Markle joining the cast.

That casting has neither been confirmed nor denied by Netflix or the show's team. Guy Ritchie's crime drama stars Theo James as Eddie Horniman, who inherits his father's country estate only to discover it harbours a cannabis empire.

Most of Netflix's continuing series struggle to attract the same audience their opening seasons drew.

Why it mattersMajor streaming shows routinely lose viewers in later seasons, suggesting audiences are harder to retain than launch hype suggests, even with celebrity buzz.

AustraliaThe Gentlemen is available on Australian Netflix, so Australian viewers considering Season 2 can see it's drawing lower interest, which may influence their viewing priority.
