Australia needs its own AI model or risk becoming dependent state, Hastie warns
Andrew Hastie warns Australia must build its own frontier AI model to stay sovereign.
Hastie told the Sydney Dialogue on Monday that without an advanced AI model at the cutting edge of the technology, Australia would become a "supplicant state, not a sovereign state". OpenAI vice-president Ann O'Leary reportedly told the conference the company wanted to expand its partnership with Australia.
She said the company recognised the importance of training AI in different places. The Albanese government announced its first nationwide AI plan earlier this year.
It aims to balance economic growth with concerns about copyright theft and environmental harms. Anthropic's chief called for slower AI development to allow safety checks to catch up.
That proposal Donald Trump rejected, citing competition from China. A researcher at Anthropic warned there is a greater than 10 per cent chance AI could pose an existential risk within the next decade.
