La Bola Negra builds three linked stories from an unfinished Lorca play
The film's stories are set in 1932, 1937 and 2017, linked across generations.
In 1932, a young man faces exclusion because of his sexuality. During the civil war, a soldier forms a forbidden bond with a Republican prisoner.
In 2017, a historian uncovers a buried family history. The three stories come together around an unfinished play by poet Federico García Lorca, who was murdered in 1936.
The play was meant to centre on a young man rejected from a Granada social club for being gay. The film suggests repression does not disappear, but changes form over time.
Dictator Francisco Franco ruled Spain until his death in 1975, and his regime persecuted queer people. The film treats the persecution of queer people as part of the civil war's story.
