Italian chef loses court bid after refusing to put pineapple on pizza
Italian chef Davide Tamburella was fired for refusing pineapple pizza. He lost his case at Fair Work.
Tamburella told his boss Elliot Ingram that putting pineapple on pizza was an insult to his culture. A customer paying over $15,000 for a large function requested ham and pineapple pizza.
Tamburella refused this request at least three times. Fair Work Commissioner Jennifer Hunt dismissed his claim.
She ruled it was filed too late. It also did not meet the rules for special cases.
Tamburella also said his firing was tied to a workplace injury. He fractured his hand hitting a metal handrail.
The restaurant, La Costa, closed in July when its lease ended. Tamburella now works at another Italian restaurant that does not serve pineapple pizza.

Why it mattersThis case shows how workplace disputes about culture and beliefs work in Australian employment law. It also asks a key question: can employers override what workers believe is right to satisfy customers?
AustraliaThe ruling confirms Australian employers have legal scope to set menu requirements even when workers object on cultural grounds; it reflects ongoing tensions in hospitality between staff autonomy and business demands.
