David Jones plans to shut 26 of 38 stores, including Burwood and Bondi
David Jones plans to reduce its store network from 38 to just 12 across Australia and New Zealand.
Australia's oldest retailer is preparing to close about two-thirds of its stores, a dramatic restructure that signals deep trouble in the department store sector. The closures would include flagship locations at Westfield Burwood in Sydney and Westfield Bondi Junction, plus stores in Perth, Parramatta, Hornsby, Canberra and Melbourne.
CEO Erica Berchtold is in advanced talks with stakeholders about the plan. Country Road Group is also pulling nearly 100 concession spaces from David Jones stores in early 2027.
The retailer, owned by Anchorage Capital Partners since 2023, has lost luxury brands including Dior, Gucci and Chanel amid mounting cost pressures and weak consumer spending.
