Heritage powder magazine becomes Launceston auction lot
34 Bourke Street in Launceston, dating from 1834, will be sold at auction on September 24.
The state government is selling 34 Bourke Street, a heritage property in Launceston with a long history. The site began in 1834 as a powder magazine storing gunpowder and explosives.
In 1894, a brick building was built there as a power station substation. The substation supplied power to Launceston for 60 years.
After the substation closed in 1903, the building became a house. Over the years it held a charity call centre and office space.
The property is zoned for public open space but allows development with council approval. It will be auctioned on September 24.
