Roof and upper floor collapse as fire destroys Townsville pub
A fire destroyed the Great Northern Hotel's roof and second storey, hospitalizing two people in Townsville's CBD.
A major fire has destroyed a heritage-protected pub in central Townsville, with the roof and upper floor collapsing. Firefighters were called to the Great Northern Hotel on Flinders Street at 6.15am Friday and contained the blaze before it spread to neighbouring buildings.
One person was taken to hospital with facial injuries and another treated for smoke inhalation. The pub, which opened in 1901, has been a landmark in Townsville's CBD.
Fire crews prevented the damage from spreading to nearby properties.
