High-speed stolen car through Ballarat suburbs results in bail refusal

The teenager was tracked by police helicopter driving a stolen SUV at speeds up to 120kmh.

A teenager was denied bail after police say he drove a stolen SUV at dangerous speeds across Ballarat suburbs on October 15 and 16. A police helicopter tracked the vehicle through Wendouree, Delacombe and Redan, recording speeds of 30-40kmh on back streets but up to 120kmh on main roads including Sturt Street.

Three people fled from the vehicle when police moved in on Friday morning, and the teen was arrested and charged with several driving offences. The magistrate refused bail, saying the driving put the teen and the community at significant risk.

She told him the speeds were reckless and "could easily have killed someone". The teen will return to court on October 26.
