Serial shoplifter given second chance with strict court conditions
Macie McSweeney was convicted and placed on a 12-month community corrections order after committing 13 shop thefts totalling $1,714.
The 26-year-old faced Bendigo Magistrates' Court on October 21 after pleading guilty to nearly 13 shop thefts over two years. Stolen items included a $69 torch from Bunnings, clothes from op shops, and goods from supermarkets around Bendigo.
McSweeney's father told the court she had kept 'terrible' company that influenced her offending. Magistrate Sharon McRae convicted McSweeney and placed her on a 12-month community corrections order with drug, alcohol and mental health treatment.
McSweeney must also pay $643 restitution. The magistrate told her: 'The life you have been living is really no good, this is a great opportunity.'
McSweeney, who was tearful at previous hearings, nodded silently in agreement.
