Josh Pyke's album honours mother before Alzheimer's took her voice
The ARIA-winning musician released a song called Magic dedicated to his mother Kate, who died 22 months ago from Alzheimer's.
Josh Pyke, Australia's four-time ARIA Award winner, has a new album with a track he wrote for his late mother, Kate. Kate died 22 months ago after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
Pyke's mum was a primary school and ESL teacher who played guitar and piano, and his first audience when he began writing songs at home. Just before she died, Pyke played at the re-opening of Balmain Power Station, a building near his childhood home.
His mother came in a wheelchair to watch the show. By that time, she was non-verbal but was there to hear him perform.
Pyke said it was amazing to have her present for that moment.
