Amateur fossicker strikes gold with $150,000 nugget find in NSW
An amateur prospector unearthed a 1,200-gram gold nugget on Mount Stuart station near Tibooburra in north-western NSW. It's worth about $150,000.
A Broken Hill prospector found a massive gold nugget weighing over a kilogram. In mid-October, he nearly walked past it.
The prospector had been searching for several days with his metal detector. When he picked up a signal and dug down about 100 millimetres, he found bright yellow gold with quartz specks.
Tests showed the nugget contains around 940 grams of pure gold. At spot price, it is worth between $150,000 and $160,000.
The prospector wants to remain anonymous. He has nicknamed his find the Tibooburra Spud.
He plans to sell it to a collector, potentially pushing the value to $200,000. A supplies shop owner in Broken Hill says high gold prices this year have drawn more people to fossicking.
But finding a kilogram-sized nugget is exceptionally rare.
