Albury Council pushes 29.96% rate rise despite 3,200-signature petition
Council recommends 14% annual rise for two years despite strong community opposition.
Albury Council staff are recommending a special rate increase that would raise council charges by 29.96% over two years, despite strong community opposition. The proposed rise is 14% each year, meaning ratepayers would pay an extra $375 overall, or $7.22 per week.
The Albury Ratepayers' Association collected 3,200 signatures on a petition against the rise. This includes 1,800 in paper form and 1,400 online.
A regulatory authority will have the final say if council votes to proceed. Council's latest offer is much smaller than two earlier proposals.
Those would have meant rises of 45% or 46% over two to three years. The association wants council to pause for 12 months.
They cite cost of living pressures and recent leadership changes. Council will vote on the recommendation at a meeting on Monday, October 12.
