Wollongong staff back 36-apartment plan at Belmore Basin motel site
Eight of the 36 apartments would be affordable rentals, managed for at least 15 years.
Wollongong council staff say a seven-storey apartment complex should be built on the Boat Harbour Motel site. The Wollongong Local Planning Panel meets Tuesday evening to consider approving it.
The developer wants to knock down the five-storey motel and a neighbouring house on Wilson Street. The plan has 36 apartments in two buildings, plus a cafe and 60 car spaces.
A state rule allows extra height if at least 10 per cent of floor space is affordable housing. Residents at 2 Wilson Street say privacy is their major concern, given how close the buildings would be.
The council report says views from level two and up at 2 Wilson Street will be obscured, except some upper balconies.
