Little Bendigo Primary opens $812k covered sports court after about 15-year wait
Little Bendigo Primary officially opens a covered sports court after about 15 years of seeking funding.
The school's old basketball court sat on a steep slope where missed balls rolled downhill and fallen branches created tripping hazards. The new covered court, funded by an $812,232 federal grant, solves that problem with a 30 by 16-metre roof, improved fencing and resurfacing.
The 15-year wish list item required several failed grant applications before finally winning support. The court now serves basketball, netball, soccer, foursquare and cricket, plus school assemblies and community events.
Students no longer need to travel to other schools to play sport. A chain-link fence keeps local wildlife including kangaroos and wombats off the playing surface.
Principal Anthony Tait said the roof allows students to play safely year-round with their friends.
