Selkirk Stadium roof replacement set for Ballarat 2027, costs unknown

Ballarat will replace Selkirk Stadium's leaky roof in the first half of 2027 but will not reveal the cost until after procurement.

Selkirk Stadium's leaky roof has forced event cancellations for years. The roof is finally being replaced next year.

The City of Ballarat completed $100,000 repair works in 2023 but confirmed in October that a full replacement is necessary. Designs are finished.

Works will begin in the first half of 2027. The council will not release cost estimates until procurement is done.

Officials say it could affect bidding competitiveness. The stadium cost $24 million to build in 2019.

Funding came from federal, state and council sources. Council says it is exploring options to avoid burdening ratepayers with the full bill.

The contractual environment is complex. Multiple entities were involved in the original design and build.

The facility recently received a $4.5 million Victorian government upgrade for lighting, scoreboards and heating.

Why it mattersRatepayers may face a large bill with no warning, while the cause of the defect and who is liable remain unclear, leaving the community unable to plan for the cost.

AustraliaVictorian ratepayers in Ballarat may be charged for a roof replacement on a stadium built with state and federal money, while councils debate who bears responsibility for the design fault.
